To meet the needs of industries in Gujarat and beyond, to contribute to the growth of industries through modern Information Technology and to provide talented youngsters of Gujarat with engineering education of a high standard the college was established in 1996. Shri Gordhanbhai Hathibhai Patel, after whom the college has been named, made a generous donation for the purpose. The college offers the following seven fouryear courses leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree of Sardar Patel University.

Of the programmes mentioned above, two are particularly innovative: Information Technology and Mechatronics Engineering. GCET is the first institution in India to offer these programmes. The college also offers two years' Master programme in Communication Engineering. In keeping with today's needs, computing facilities with more than 450 computers having P4 processors and an Internet Connection through 10 Mbps shared radio link as well as Wi-Fi connectivity all over the campus have been provided for use of students and the staff of the college.

A centrally air-conditioned auditorium named after Shrimati Kamalaben Shankarbhai Patel, with seating capacity of 460 and seminar room with a capacity of 125 add to the ambience of the college. All admissions in the college are given as per the state policy.

Candidates seeking admission to first degree programmes should have passed HSCE (Science) or equivalent examination as per state rules. Students are admitted to GCET purely on the basis of merit. As per regulations of Sardar Patel University Faculty of Engineering & Technology, the college follows a Creditbased system of studies similar to that followed at IITs and universities abroad. It is widely recognized that the credit-based system of studies inculcates in the students a sense of responsibility, habit of hardworking and respect for deadlines thereby making them more successful professionals. All the departments of the college have state-of-the-art laboratories with latest experimental setups. A number of elective courses giving exposure to latest and upcoming frontiers of knowledge are offered at the college. Highly qualified, competent and motivated teaching staff, many of them with years of industrial experience and research interest, are appointed at GCET for rendering the education and training programmes more effective.

Every year the faculty publishes a large number of technical papers in national and international journals and also provides consultancy services to industries. An Industrial Consultancy Cell has been established in the college to coordinate and facilitate industry -institute linkages. Specially designed language and communication skills courses as well as personality development programmes are conducted for students to train them in soft skills. Placement Cell coordinates placement activities and helps the students in preparing for placement interviews. The college has been achieving 100% placement of eligible students in wellknown organizations and MNC's every year. The college was ranked among top 100 colleges across the country by Outlook Magazine in 2006. It has received best ISTE student and staff chapter awards. The students and the college have been winning prizes and medals at technical, sports and cultural meets locally as well as in other institutions/universities.

Hostel accommodation for boys and girls is available. It is something to write home about that Shri Gordhanbhai Hathibhai Patel Trust has made donation for the Girls Hostel and that Shri Manubhai Somabhai Desai (Nadiad/Gamdi) for separate library and reading room in the college.
